Check whether a photo contains a location

Open the photo in Apple Photos and tap the Info button or swipe up. If location was recorded, Photos shows a map or place beneath the camera and file details. Review the image itself too: street signs, reflections, badges, documents, windows, and recognizable rooms can reveal more than metadata.

Remove the saved location from a photo

Apple's current guidance is:

  1. Open the photo in Photos.
  2. Tap the More button.
  3. Choose Adjust Location.
  4. Choose No Location.

You can apply location changes to a selection of photos as well. Afterward, reopen the information panel and verify that the map is gone before sharing.

Exclude location only for this share

If you want to keep location in your library but not send it with a particular share:

  1. Select the photo or photos and open the share sheet.
  2. Tap Options near the top.
  3. Turn off Location.
  4. Tap Done, then choose the recipient or destination.

This is a share-time choice. Confirm it again on future shares rather than assuming it became a permanent preference.

Stop the Camera from recording future locations

Go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Camera, then choose Never if you do not want the Camera app to embed location. This also removes location-based organization and search for new camera photos, so it is a privacy-versus-convenience decision.

Location is only one part of metadata

A photo may still contain or reveal:

  • capture date and time;
  • device and camera characteristics;
  • filename, dimensions, and editing history;
  • captions or other application-added fields;
  • faces, documents, screens, vehicle plates, landmarks, or addresses visible in the pixels;
  • information added by the receiving service, including account identity and upload time.

Removing EXIF or GPS fields does not anonymize a photograph. If the visual content itself is sensitive, crop or redact a copy and inspect the final exported file.

What happens inside an encrypted vault

NullVault is designed to encrypt app-managed content and sensitive metadata within the vault boundary. A plaintext export creates a new file outside that boundary. The destination may generate a preview, thumbnail, cloud backup, message attachment, or log even when the exported file has no GPS coordinates.

Use secure export deliberately, and assume a recipient can keep, forward, edit, or photograph anything they can view.

A 30-second pre-share check

  • Inspect the information panel.
  • Remove or exclude Location.
  • Look for identifying details inside the image.
  • Share a redacted or cropped copy where appropriate.
  • Confirm the intended recipient and destination.
  • Delete unnecessary working copies from the editing app and its trash.
