A grace period, not a deletion
Deleting a photo moves it to Recently Deleted, where it remains recoverable for a limited window before permanent removal.
This protects against mistakes and it means the content continues to exist for a period after you believed you removed it. Both facts matter depending on which problem you have.
It is locked, on device authority
On current iOS releases Recently Deleted requires Face ID, Touch ID, or the passcode. That prevents casual browsing of what you deleted.
As with Hidden, the authority is the device's, so anyone who can authenticate the device can open it.
Synchronisation applies here too
With iCloud Photos, deletion and recovery propagate across devices signed in to the library. Deleting on one device places it in Recently Deleted everywhere; recovering it restores it everywhere.
That also means someone with access to another signed-in device can see and recover what you deleted.
Managing it
- Confirm authentication is enabled for Recently Deleted.
- Review which devices are signed in to the same Apple Account.
- Permanently delete only after considering backups and any need to retain the item.
- Remember that permanent deletion here does not reach exports or copies elsewhere.
