Hidden means a library state, not local-only storage

Hiding changes where an item appears in Photos. Apple says hidden items do not appear in the main library, ordinary albums, or the Photos widget, and the Hidden collection is locked by default on current systems. The underlying item still belongs to the photo library.

That is why the setting travels. iCloud Photos synchronizes the library and changes made to it, including hiding, unhiding, editing, and deletion. Turning off the visual display of the Hidden collection on one device should not be treated as deleting its contents or moving them off iCloud.

Who could encounter a hidden photo?

Consider every access path, not only the phone in your hand:

  • another trusted device signed in to the same Apple Account;
  • iCloud.com after account authentication;
  • a participant in an iCloud Shared Photo Library when the item belongs to that shared library;
  • someone who can unlock the Hidden collection using an accepted device credential;
  • an account recovery or device-compromise scenario outside the Photos interface.

Apple notes that hiding a photo in a Shared Photo Library hides it for all participants, who can view or unhide it. Do not place a private photo in a shared library merely because its current state is hidden.

Does turning off iCloud Photos remove the cloud copy?

Not necessarily. Changing synchronization on one device does not by itself prove that an item has been removed from iCloud or from other devices. Before changing settings, inspect the library at iCloud.com, confirm whether originals are stored on the device, and understand any download or removal prompt shown by iOS.

If you want a private item outside iCloud Photos, use a deliberate migration:

  1. Create and verify the destination copy.
  2. Confirm how that destination is backed up.
  3. Remove the source from Photos only after verification.
  4. Review Recently Deleted, other synchronized devices, shared libraries, messages, and prior exports.

Deletion in iCloud Photos also synchronizes. Apple normally retains deleted items in Recently Deleted for 30 days unless they are removed sooner.

How a local encrypted vault differs

A local vault keeps its managed encrypted copy outside the Photos library and can operate without using iCloud Photos. That reduces one synchronization path, but introduces a device-loss risk: if the only encrypted copy is on one phone and that phone fails, the data may be unrecoverable.

A practical audit

  • Open Settings, your Apple Account, iCloud, and Photos to confirm whether this device synchronizes.
  • Review the Hidden collection on each device you control.
  • Check iCloud.com directly rather than assuming the local view is complete.
  • Inspect Shared Library ownership for especially sensitive items.
  • Treat downloads, exports, messages, and old backups as separate copies.
