Choose the video’s storage boundary

Use the iPhone Hidden album workflow when device authentication is sufficient. For an independent pattern and encrypted imported copy, see NullVault for iPhone. Hiding the source and importing a copy are different operations.

Before removing a large original, verify playback and recovery. Use the original-quality checklist to check duration, audio, format and any related resources, rather than relying on a thumbnail.

Hidden keeps the video inside Photos

Moving a video to the locked Hidden collection provides casual privacy: it leaves the main grid and requires authentication to open.

It remains part of the Photos library and its iCloud synchronisation, so it appears as hidden on every device signed in to the same account rather than being removed from them.

Size changes the failure modes

Large files make partial failures easy to miss. An upload or transfer that has not completed looks the same as one that has, until you try to play the file on another device.

This matters most at exactly the moment people delete originals — during a migration or a cleanup, when the transfer may still be running.

Copies that videos leave behind

Editing a video generally produces a separate rendered file. Sending it through a messaging app creates an attachment copy, usually re-encoded. Exporting to Files leaves a plain copy outside Photos entirely.

None of those follow the original into Hidden, and each has its own lifecycle.

Working through it

  • Check whether iCloud Photos is enabled on every connected device.
  • Hide one test video and confirm the authentication behaviour.
  • Inspect edited versions, Files exports, shared albums, and message threads.
  • For an independent boundary, import into an encrypted vault and verify playback of the beginning, middle, end, and audio.
  • Verify a separate recovery path before deleting anything irreplaceable.

Three errors

  • Confusing Hidden with removal from iCloud Photos.
  • Deleting an original before a large transfer has finished.
  • Ignoring saved, edited, or messaged copies.

A fictional example

Priya starts with a non-sensitive test: “Check whether iCloud Photos is enabled on every connected device.” Next, Priya follows the second check: “Hide a test video and confirm authentication behavior.” This fictional scenario demonstrates the decision process; it is not a report of product testing.

Common mistakes

  • Confusing Hidden with removal from iCloud Photos
  • Deleting before a large transfer finishes
  • Ignoring saved or edited copies

What this workflow does not change

  • Confusing Hidden with removal from iCloud Photos
  • Deleting before a large transfer finishes
  • Ignoring saved or edited copies

Questions people ask

Will Hidden videos sync?

When iCloud Photos is enabled, hidden status can synchronize with the photo library across connected devices.

Can a vault preserve the original video?

That depends on the released app's documented import behavior; test representative formats before relying on it.
