Hiding the entry point, not the content
Photos allows the Hidden album to be removed from the albums list, so it no longer appears during ordinary browsing. That is what this setting does, and it is the whole of what it does.
The items remain in the Photos library, still synchronise through iCloud Photos, and are still reachable by anyone who turns the setting back on. It reduces casual discovery and nothing beyond that.
Two separate settings
There is a visibility setting, which controls whether the album is listed, and an authentication setting, which controls whether opening it requires Face ID, Touch ID, or the passcode.
They are independent, and only the second is a boundary. Turning off visibility while leaving authentication off produces concealment without protection.
The rest of the library still matters
Hiding an item does not remove duplicates in ordinary albums, edited versions saved separately, copies in message threads, or anything already shared.
It also does not affect other devices signed in to the same Apple Account beyond synchronising the hidden state itself.

- Move only the intended items to Hidden, rather than a broad selection.
- Confirm authentication is required for both Hidden and Recently Deleted.
- Turn off the option that shows the Hidden album in the albums list.
- Audit shared libraries, exports, message threads, and other Apple devices separately.
