Start with the Hidden album's visibility
In Photos, the Hidden album appears under Utilities and requires authentication. If it is not listed at all, the Show Hidden Album setting has been turned off — which is a display setting, not a sign the items are gone.
Enable it, authenticate, and check before assuming anything was deleted.
Confirm which library you are looking at
A missing item is frequently in a different library rather than missing: a second Apple Account, an incompletely synced device, or a Shared Library rather than the personal one.
Check the active Apple Account and whether iCloud Photos has finished synchronising before searching further.
The other places items go
- Recently Deleted, which retains items for a limited window.
- The Recovered album, which holds items found by a database repair.
- Imports, where a photo may sit under its capture date rather than its import date.
- A vault app you used intentionally, which stores an imported copy separately from Photos; whether the original remains depends on the import and deletion workflow.
Working through it
- Confirm the active Apple Account and the iCloud Photos sync status.
- Enable Show Hidden Album and authenticate.
- Search Recently Deleted and Recovered.
- Check any vault app you imported into.
- Search by date rather than scrolling, since ordering follows capture date.
Two things not to do while searching
- Deleting and reinstalling a vault app during troubleshooting.
- Running recovery software before preserving the current device state.
A fictional example
Amara starts with a non-sensitive test: “Confirm the active Apple Account and iCloud Photos status.” Next, Amara follows the second check: “Enable the Hidden collection entry point.” This fictional scenario demonstrates the decision process; it is not a report of product testing.
Common mistakes
- Deleting and reinstalling a vault during troubleshooting
- Using recovery software before preserving current device state
What this workflow does not change
- Deleting and reinstalling a vault during troubleshooting
- Using recovery software before preserving current device state
Questions people ask
Can Apple search an encrypted third-party vault for me?
No. App-managed encryption and recovery are controlled by that app's design.
