Several states look identical from the Home Screen
An app missing from the Home Screen may have been removed from the Home Screen only, placed in the authenticated Hidden area, restricted by Screen Time, offloaded to save space, or genuinely deleted.
Each has a different recovery path, so identifying the state is the first step rather than reinstalling.
Where to look, in order
- App Library, which holds every installed app regardless of Home Screen layout.
- Device search, which finds installed apps by name.
- The Hidden apps area, which requires authentication on supported versions.
- Screen Time content and privacy restrictions, which can hide apps entirely.
- App Store purchase history, which shows apps previously downloaded on the account.
- Device storage, which lists offloaded apps still holding their data.
Offloaded apps retain their data
An offloaded app shows as installed with a download icon, and reinstalling restores its documents. This is worth checking before assuming data was lost.
A deleted app is a different case: purchase history will show it, but its local data is generally gone.
