Make the irreversible step the last step
Before erasing the old device, open the files you need on the replacement. Verify more than a backup timestamp: restore a harmless sample, check that you know the required recovery credential, and confirm the destination platform supports the backup format.
A local vault is only one part of the device. Cloud accounts, payment credentials, device-finding locks, authentication apps and ordinary files have their own transfer requirements. Follow the manufacturer's current instructions for handing ownership to another person.
Decide what each copy is for
Keep a backup that survives losing the replacement phone. Remove redundant plaintext exports only after the retained copy is confirmed. Do not interpret the fact that an app's content list is empty as proof of physical storage sanitization.
If the phone is damaged and cannot be erased normally, stop experimenting with unverified reset methods and ask the device maker or a qualified repair provider about the available options. The recovery and disposal choices can conflict when the old phone holds the only copy.
