With Advanced Data Protection enabled, Photos moves into the end-to-end encrypted categories, where the keys are held only on your trusted devices.
What Advanced Data Protection changes about you
Enabling it shifts recovery responsibility onto you. Apple can no longer restore access to your data, so a recovery contact or recovery key becomes mandatory rather than optional.
This is a real trade rather than a free upgrade. Losing access with ADP enabled and no working recovery method means losing the data permanently.
The documented exceptions still apply
End-to-end encryption covers the stored library. It does not extend to everything the service does with it.
Shared Albums and public links operate under different models by design, some metadata remains accessible for the service to function, and web access at iCloud.com requires a deliberate step that changes the key handling. Reading the current documentation matters more than the headline.
