Compare by custody, not by capacity
Storage options are usually compared on price and space, which are the least consequential differences. What actually distinguishes them is who holds the keys, where copies live, how deletion propagates, and who can restore access after a loss.
Answer those four for each option and the right choice for your situation usually becomes obvious.
Local device storage
A genuinely local-only library has no provider copy, but disabling iCloud Photos alone does not establish that: photos may still be included in iCloud Backup or retained by another service. Check synchronization, backup settings, and existing remote copies separately.
If the only usable copy is on one device, loss, theft, damage, or reset can make it unrecoverable. A tested separate backup reduces this risk; its location, encryption, and recovery credentials introduce their own tradeoffs.
Cloud photo library
Availability across devices, straightforward sharing, and recovery that survives losing the phone. For most people this is the pragmatic default and it is a reasonable one.
The costs are an account that becomes a single point of failure, a provider with some level of access depending on your encryption settings, and synchronised deletion that propagates mistakes everywhere at once.
Encrypted vault
A separate credential and encrypted storage, holding a subset of content rather than the whole library. It adds separation the other two do not provide, particularly against someone who already has the unlocked phone.
Backup behavior depends on the app and its settings: a vault may participate in device backup, exclude its data, or use its own encrypted backup. Verify the documented restore path rather than assuming platform backup covers it.
How to decide
- Map where live copies and synchronised mirrors actually exist for each option.
- Identify who holds recovery authority — you, a provider, or nobody.
- Test original-quality import, export, and restore before committing content.
- Expect to use more than one: a cloud library for most photos, a vault for a subset.
