Family Sharing is not a shared library
Family Sharing coordinates purchases, subscriptions, storage plans, and location sharing between separate Apple Accounts. It does not merge photo libraries or grant family members access to each other's photos by default.
The anxiety is understandable and usually misplaced. The real exposure comes from other arrangements that families set up alongside it.
Where the actual exposure comes from
- A Shared Photo Library or Shared Album someone deliberately created.
- Multiple people using one Apple Account rather than separate accounts.
- A device passcode that several family members know.
- Account recovery is a separate process: a recovery contact can provide a code but cannot access your account or photos.
- An old device still signed in to your account.
The shared-account problem
Using one Apple Account across several people is the single arrangement that genuinely merges everything, because from the service's perspective there is one person.
It also complicates separation later, since disentangling purchases and libraries is considerably harder than setting up separate accounts at the start. Family Sharing exists precisely so this is unnecessary.
Auditing the real access map
- Confirm every family member uses their own Apple Account.
- Review Shared Album and Shared Library participants.
- Check which devices are signed in to your account, including old ones.
- Review recovery contacts and trusted phone numbers.
- Consider who knows the device passcode, which no account setting addresses.
