The transfer is fine; discovery is the risk
AirDrop provides a direct encrypted transfer between devices, and the transfer itself is not usually where problems arise.
The exposure is in discoverability and recipient selection: being visible to strangers in a public space, and sending to the wrong nearby device because two contacts have similar names.
Receiving visibility is the setting that matters
Leaving receiving set to everyone makes the device discoverable to nearby strangers, which is the mechanism behind unsolicited image sending in public places.
Contacts Only limits discovery by strangers, and Receiving Off disables incoming AirDrop requests when unused. Where a temporary everyone-mode exists it expires by design — let it, rather than re-enabling it out of habit.
Confirm the recipient on screen
The sending sheet shows names and device labels of nearby devices. In a busy environment several may look plausible, and a mis-tap can start sending to the wrong recipient; acceptance or other confirmation may still be required.
Take the extra second to read the name and device before tapping, particularly for anything sensitive.
Change who can AirDrop to you
On iPhone, open Settings, then General, then AirDrop, and choose one option:
- Receiving Off: nobody can send you anything.
- Contacts Only: only people in your contacts can see your phone.
- Everyone for 10 Minutes: anyone nearby for a short time, then it switches back to Contacts Only.
If someone sends you an unwanted image
You don't have to accept an AirDrop request. Tap Decline and the file never reaches your phone.
On recent iOS versions you can also turn on Sensitive Content Warning in Settings, under Privacy & Security. It blurs images detected as nude before you see them, including in AirDrop, and you decide whether to view them.
Sending safely
- Set receiving to Contacts Only or off before entering crowded spaces.
- Confirm the exact recipient name and device on screen before sending.
- Strip location metadata before sharing sensitive images.
- Check where received files land, since the destination varies by file type.

- Using a temporary everyone-visible mode for longer than the moment requires.
- Retaining any sender control once a file has been accepted.
