Planning family access if you cannot unlock your files

Choose which documents a trusted person should receive, and prepare a recovery path that does not depend on your only phone or an assumed account bypass.

Separate urgent access from inheritance

A family member needing a document while you are unavailable faces a different problem from someone managing your digital estate after death. Decide which records must be accessible immediately and which should remain private. Giving access to an entire personal archive is often unnecessary when a small, separately prepared document set would meet the need.

Do not assume that knowing your device passcode, being in a family group, or having a purchase receipt gives someone the credentials needed to recover an independently encrypted vault. Write down the intended process in language the recipient can follow, without placing the recovery secret beside an unprotected copy of the backup.

Match the arrangement to the need

Need Preparation Important boundary
A document is needed during a short absence Provide a reviewed copy through an agreed channel The recipient controls the resulting copy
A trusted person needs ongoing read-only access Evaluate the documented iOS sharing flow It requires compatible iCloud access and is not Android sharing
The original phone may be unavailable Prepare and test a supported backup recovery path A phrase alone does not contain the files
Access should begin after death or inactivity Review the account provider’s dedicated arrangements Provider access does not establish app-level decryptability

Understand what provider arrangements cover

Apple’s Legacy Contact documentation describes access to certain account data after death and excludes iCloud Keychain data such as passwords and passkeys. Google’s Inactive Account Manager can share selected account data after a configured period of inactivity. Neither description establishes a general way to bypass a separate vault’s recovery requirements.

NullVault’s role

Secure sharing on iOS provides a separate read-only replica with its own sharing phrase; it is not an automatic emergency-access or inheritance service. Android does not support that connected sharing flow. For encrypted backups, identify the exact platform, valid backup and matching recovery material before relying on another person to restore anything.

Use the backup checklist and recovery-phrase storage guide to document a workable arrangement. Test with non-sensitive sample files first, and revisit it when devices, trusted contacts or relationships change. A plan that nobody can find or carry out is not a usable recovery path.
