Private information beyond the visible picture

A photograph can disclose a location through embedded coordinates even when the scene contains no obvious landmark. Conversely, a sign, reflection, face or document number may reveal information after all removable metadata is gone. These are different disclosure paths and require different checks.

EXIF is one family of metadata. Image files may also carry XMP, IPTC, comments, color profiles, and provenance information. Removing one family should not be described as removing every possible identifier.

Inspect a copy before sharing

Start with a duplicate and inspect the actual file you intend to send. Review removable fields, decide whether provenance information should be retained, and rescan the output. Then look at the image itself. Crop or redact identifying visual details only when appropriate, and verify that the exported copy actually contains the intended change.

Storage protection and sharing cleanup are different
