Decide what the technician needs to access, verify a recoverable backup, and reduce unnecessary copies before the device leaves your control.
First decide whether access is necessary
A battery replacement and a software investigation can require different preparation. Ask the repair provider what must be unlocked and follow the current instructions for your device. Do not assume that opening a private vault is part of an ordinary repair requirement. If you need access to essential documents while the phone is away, arrange an independent copy before leaving it.
Choose the preparation path
| Situation | Decision before handoff |
|---|---|
| The phone works normally | Verify a backup and review the provider's preparation instructions |
| The screen is broken but the device still runs | Avoid destructive experimentation; establish what data can still be recovered |
| You need to leave the device unlocked | Consider whether sensitive material needs to be present on that device at all |
| You are unsure whether your backup works | Keep the original data until a restore has been tested |
A vault adds a boundary around its app-managed copy. It does not remove originals from Photos, Downloads, messages or synchronized libraries. Use the copy audit before treating an import as cleanup.
NullVault's role
Automatic lock closes the active session when you leave the app under the documented platform behavior. Encrypted backup helps prepare for data loss. Neither makes a compromised device safe.
Follow the dedicated iPhone repair guide or Android repair guide, which link to platform-specific preparation sources. After service, verify the device and your data before discarding the backup.
