What “without an account” should mean

You can create, unlock, organize, and use local vaults without registering an email or signing in to a NullVault service. Local content stays in private app storage unless you deliberately export it or create an encrypted backup.

Account-free does not necessarily mean network-free, telemetry-free, or backup-free for every product. Ask each app separately. NullVault documents its local-first boundary in offline without an account.

What responsibility moves to you

Without automatic provider sync, a lost or reset phone can mean data loss. You must create a portable encrypted backup, separate its recovery phrase, and test restoration. Support cannot recreate cryptographic secrets you never gave it.

  1. Can the app open and search while fully offline?
  2. Is an account introduced later for backup or payment?
  3. What analytics or crash data can leave the device?
  4. Does uninstall delete local data?
  5. Can a portable backup be restored on a replacement phone?
  6. Who can reset the access credential?

Platform status

See NullVault for iPhone and NullVault for Android for released capabilities. Core local vault use works offline on both. Optional iCloud backup and sharing on iPhone use Apple services; purchases, restoration of purchases, updates and cloud-only file downloads require a connection. Those services are separate from local vault access.

When this approach fits

NullVault fits account-free users who accept deliberate backup management in exchange for local control and compartmentalized vaults. A cloud photo service is better when provider-managed continuity matters more than keeping routine storage local.
